Our History
In 1896 Edward Crossley purchased the land and built a residence at the front of the property – one of the first houses to be built on Stirling Street, and an ironworks and foundry out the back. The ground floor of this Victorian era two story terrace building was used as a showroom for hardware and homewares with the residence in the second story above the showroom. The single storey shop front, which we currently occupy, was a later addition to the building.
Building of the extension was completed in 1927 by Thomas Chadd who had been renting the ground floor since 1907 with his business partner Benjamin Whitty. Their business was initially a bakery which supplied bread, pastries and cakes to various businesses in the Bunbury area and later a general store. Chadd purchased the property in 1924 and the Chadd family lived in the residence upstairs.
The store remained a general store for many years until it was no longer able to compete with the supermarket giants. Since then, the space has been used as an artist studio/gallery, art workshop, floral design workshop, photography studio, live music venue and now a boutique gallery specialising in bespoke furniture, art, jewellery and handcrafted homewares.
